Morning Light Before Screens

Ten minutes outside before you look at your phone. It steadies your sleep, your mood, and the part of you that wakes up already braced for bad news.

If the first thing you meet each morning is a screen, you are handing the tone of your whole day to whatever is on it — a message, a memory, a notification from someone you are trying to heal from.

Do this

  1. Before you pick up your phone, step outside. A porch, a doorway, a window thrown open all count.
  2. Stay for ten minutes. You do not have to do anything while you are there.
  3. Let the light hit your face and your eyes — no sunglasses, and never look straight at the sun.
  4. If ten minutes is too long, start with two. Two is not a failure.

Making it stick

Pair it with something you already do. Coffee on the step instead of at the counter. The dog out five minutes earlier. Anything you already do every day will carry this along with it.

Why it works

Morning light sets the clock that decides when you get sleepy at night. People coming out of long stress often have that clock badly out of order — wired late, exhausted at dawn. Light in the first hour after waking is the strongest, simplest correction there is, and it is free.
